This past Friday, April 21st was another installment of our ArcGIS for Local Government Solutions Showcase in Elgin, IL. Thanks to all our participants and speakers who sacrificed a glorious day outside to talk GIS with us.  Here are a few links and explanations to the topics that were covered.

Smart Communities

Joe Araiza from Esri presented on the idea of Smart Communities and how it can impact local governments moving forward. By incorporating GIS into every facet of government, your organizations can start to look for trends in data and where potential issues may arise. The ArcGIS platform allows organizations unparalleled connectivity and the ability for office, field, and executive staff to communicate with each other in real time when handling projects.

What's new with Parcel Mapping:

Jonathan Hodel presented on what is new regarding parcel mapping.  By utilizing the Community Parcel tool in ArcGIS Pro, Jon was able to show the new ability of bringing one set of parcel data (i.e. from a City) and merge it with that of another agency (i.e. for a County). You can view a slide show of Jon's presentation HERE or check out the Community Parcels video.

Grundy County Comps Finder App:

The Comp Finder application was developed to automate the process of locating comparable properties based on both real estate characteristic similarities, and distances to a user supplied reference property. When a user runs the comp finder tool from within the application the resulting selection set can be defined as, a grouping of the most mathematically similar parcels that are also the most proximal to a given reference property.  This application was built out of a need to improve the efficiency of the county's assessment office in terms of the time it takes for them to process assessment complaints each year. In time the tool will also be released to the public so that county residents can also use the tool to see if their property is being fairly assessed.

Field Mobility and Integration with ArcGIS

Jordan gave us the latest on the various applications available from ESRI designed to facilitate mobile data access and collection. He explained the benefits and uses of each and when to use which application - for example, when you would want to use Survey123 vs Collector vs Explorer. He also covered Workforce and the ease of setting up tasks, monitoring field operations, and using Navigator for route planning. By doing this, Jordan was able to show how many specialty apps are available to streamline work, communication, and project management.

Build Your Own Web Apps:

Paul Stephenson from Cloudpoint Geographics discussed how organizations can produce webmaps via the Web App builder for ArcGIS. You can learn about this powerful GIS tool by revisiting Paul's presentation HERE.

Overview of Drones and UAV's:
