Going Native

We all know that our web maps and mapping applications we create can be accessed via mobile devices, and the interaction is actually fairly seamless and smooth. But say you want to go one step further, and actually create a native app that is available from the app store of your choice - or that feels like it was designed for your device - where do you start?

Enter AppStudio. As it is with web mapping applications these days, whether you are a developer or not, ESRI has been building this tools for you to get easily get off the ground. Using your AGO credentials, you can access the maps and layers you've created and use them as inputs for your native app with AppStudio.

If you're just getting started, there are templates to get you up and running: Map Tour (Story) Map Viewer (Gallery) or Quick Report (Collection). I suggest Quick Report for the wow factor and ease of setup.

Before signing your app (making it official) you can view it live on your device using the AppStudio Player app -  Test drive it and make any to determine if any changes are needed.

I would note that some items such as images, feature popups and layouts might not translate as expected when going from your initial map or application to one of the native templates, so be ready to make adjustments here or there.

If you're a developer, you can get in and further customize your application. If your not, you've got a great application nearly ready to roll out that will impress and perform. Enjoy!
